The most underrated way to see the Douro: the regional train from São Bento station follows the river east into the wine country for two hours, passing terraced vineyards stacked into the hillside the entire way. €15 round-trip, no tour needed. Get off at Pinhão, walk five minutes to a quinta for lunch and a tasting, walk back to the station. Total day: 9am–7pm, around €60 including lunch.
