About
Lisbon's oldest pastry shop — open since 1829, still run by the same family (the Castanheiros), former official confectioner to the Portuguese royal house. The ground floor is a marble counter under a mirrored ceiling and Pombaline mural work; upstairs there's a tearoom and a small dining room that serves Portuguese lunch plates. This is where the Bolo Rei (Portuguese Christmas king cake) tradition started in 1850. Worth knowing: it's a tourist-heavy spot now, prices run higher than a neighborhood pastelaria, and table service is slow and only upstairs. Come for the room and the history, manage expectations on speed.
